Frequently asked questions
What Is the Difference Between the FAW and the FAW Refresher Course (or Requalification as I have sometimes seen it called)?
The First Aid at Work (FAW) Course is a full 3-day qualification designed for individuals who are becoming workplace first aiders for the first time, or for those whose previous FAW certificate has expired beyond the permitted renewal period.
The First Aid at Work Requalification (FAW-R) Course – sometimes referred to as a Refresher or Renewal Course – is a shorter 2-day course designed specifically for delegates who already hold a valid FAW certificate and need to renew their qualification before it expires.
The FAW Requalification course refreshes and reassesses existing first aid knowledge and practical skills, ensuring delegates remain confident, competent, and compliant with current workplace first aid requirements.
If a First Aid at Work certificate has expired beyond the allowable renewal period, delegates are normally required to complete the full 3-day FAW course again.
At P3 First Aid Training, we are happy to discuss your current certification status and help you identify the most suitable course to maintain your workplace first aid compliance and confidence.
Is the course accredited?
Yes – this course, along with the majority of our training programmes (unless specifically delivered as bespoke non-accredited training), is fully accredited by the First Aid Industry Body (FAIB).
This accreditation ensures that our courses meet recognised industry standards and provide learners with high-quality, compliant first aid training delivered by experienced professionals.
P3 First Aid Training is licensed to deliver accredited FAIB qualifications under licence number 23/26 (11162).
Can I Progress to Higher Levels of First Aid Training?
At P3 First Aid Training, we actively encourage delegates to continue developing their skills, knowledge, and confidence through advanced first aid and pre-hospital emergency care training.
For learners wishing to progress beyond the First Aid at Work (FAW) Course, we offer the nationally recognised First Response Emergency Care (FREC) Courses at Levels 3, 4, and 5. These advanced qualifications provide a significantly broader scope of practice and enhanced clinical knowledge for those looking to work within emergency medical and ambulance-related environments.
What Do FREC Courses Cover?
FREC courses build upon existing first aid knowledge and introduce learners to more advanced areas of pre-hospital emergency care, including:
- Patient assessment and monitoring
- ECG recognition and interpretation
- Trauma management
- Medical emergency care
- Airway management support
- Assisting senior clinicians with procedures such as intubation and cannulation preparation
- Equipment preparation and medication checks
- Enhanced emergency scene management
The FREC Level 4 Qualification and FREC Level 5 Qualification are more advanced programmes that require additional workplace competencies and support from an ambulance service or approved clinical placement provider to complete certain practical elements and sign-off requirements. Our team is always happy to discuss these pathways in more detail and help guide delegates through the progression process.
Who Are FREC Courses Suitable For?
FREC qualifications are ideal for individuals looking to pursue or develop careers within:
- Event Medical Services
- Ambulance Patient Transport Services
- Urgent Care Roles
- Pre-Hospital Emergency Care
- Emergency and Paramedic Support Services
These qualifications are highly respected within the event medical and ambulance sectors and are specifically designed to provide learners with practical, real-world emergency care skills.
Whether you are beginning a career in emergency care or looking to expand your existing first aid qualifications, our experienced instructors provide supportive, scenario-based training designed to prepare learners for the demands of pre-hospital emergency response.
How Many Delegates Can Attend the First Aid at Work Refresher (FAWr) Course?
Our First Aid at Work Refresher (FAWr) Course is delivered with a maximum ratio of 12 delegates per instructor. This ensures every learner receives high-quality, engaging, and practical first aid training with appropriate instructor support throughout the course.
For businesses requiring larger group training, P3 First Aid Training may be able to provide two instructors for the same course delivery, subject to venue size and suitability. This allows up to 24 delegates to complete the same first aid course on the same day while maintaining excellent training standards and learner engagement.
We are always happy to discuss larger group bookings and provide flexible workplace first aid training solutions tailored to your operational requirements.
Can I Attend the 2-Day FAW Requalification Course if My Certificate Has Expired?
Unfortunately, no – the First Aid at Work (FAW) Requalification Course is only available to delegates whose current First Aid at Work certificate remains within the required 3-year requalification period.
To qualify for the shorter 2-day refresher or requalification course, your existing FAW certificate must still be valid at the time of attendance. The expiry date can be found on your current certificate.
Before confirming a booking onto the FAW Requalification course, P3 First Aid Training will require a copy of your current certificate as evidence of eligibility. Delegates who are unable to provide valid certification may not be permitted to continue with the course.
If your certificate has been lost, misplaced, or you are unsure about your eligibility, please contact our administration team before booking. We are always happy to provide guidance and help identify the most suitable first aid training option for your circumstances.
Are There Any Physical Requirements for Attending particular Course?
Yes – delegates attending any First Aid Training Course must be physically able to participate in the practical assessment elements of the course.
This includes being able to:
- Kneel on the floor to demonstrate effective CPR
- Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) safely and correctly
- Place an unconscious breathing casualty into the recovery position
These practical skills form an essential part of the course assessment and ongoing accreditation process. Instructors and assessors are required to confirm that each learner can safely and competently demonstrate these lifesaving techniques before certification can be awarded.
At P3 First Aid Training, we always encourage delegates to discuss any concerns or accessibility requirements with us prior to booking so we can offer guidance and support wherever possible.
Do I Need Previous First Aid Experience to Attend the FAW Course?
No- our First Aid at Work (FAW) Course is suitable for both beginners and those who may have previously completed first aid training but allowed their certification to expire.
The course is designed to be easy to follow and accessible to learners of all experience levels. Through a combination of practical learning and clear instruction, delegates are guided step-by-step through the fundamental principles of workplace first aid.
At P3 First Aid Training, we focus on building confidence, practical skills, and real-world understanding, enabling learners to effectively assess and assist someone requiring medical attention both in the workplace and in everyday situation.
Are Certificates Provided After Completing the Course?
Yes – upon successful completion of your First Aid Training Course, delegates will receive certification from P3 First Aid Training.
As part of our commitment to reducing environmental impact and minimising unnecessary waste, certificates are primarily issued electronically. This provides delegates and businesses with fast, convenient access to their qualification documents while supporting environmentally responsible practices.
If hard copy certificates are preferred, these can also be provided upon request for an additional charge to cover printing, packaging, and postage costs. Please advise us at the time of booking if printed certificates are required so the relevant costs can be included within your invoice.
